The Vice-Chancellor of the Adeyemi Federal University of Education (AFUED), Ondo Prof. Richard king, on Monday, August 2, assumed duty in the institution.
Prof. King was received by Principal Officers of the University led by the Registrar, Mr. Felix Eniola Aderinboye
Also on hand to receive the AFUED helmsman were the Bursar, Mr. Ganiyu Abdul and the Acting Librarian, Mr. Akinade Awoyemi.
In an interview with newsmen shortly after undertaking a familiarisation tour of the University campus, Prof. King outlined his vision for the University in what he termed: “Short Term Focal Areas of Transformation”
He listed the areas to include the establishment of relevant and administrative faculties, colleges and departments, appointment of Deans, Directors and Heads of Departments in relevant positions; initiation of staff development and welfare package and students welfare.
Prof. King also stated that his administration would focus attention on aesthetics with particular emphasis on sanitation, solid waste management and beautification.
The University administrator also said efforts would be made to boost Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and establishment of strong bilateral relations with other Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria and Abroad.
While reiterating his determination towards ensuring rapid development of the University to make it centre of excellence, Prof. King, therefore, urged staff and student to support his administration assuring that their welfare would be given priority.
The University helmsman also solicited for the support of all the unions in the task of moving the institution forward.
Professor Richard P. King was born on 17th May, 1958 into the family nucleus of Chief John King Usoro (deceased). John K.K as he was popularly called was a descendant of the Nung Awo Otontia family root in Ikot Ebek village in Idua Clan both in the present day Eket Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.
Prof. Richard Peter King had his primary education in St. Gregory’s Primary School, Ikot Ebot, Eket, Akwa Ibom State where he obtained the first school leaving certificate (FSLC- distinction) Nigerian Christian School, Ukpom, Abak, Akwa Ibom State (now Secondary School, Ukpom Abak); School of Biological Sciences, University of Port Harcourt where he obtain his B.Sc Hons (second Class Upper Division) in Zoology in 1981.
After the one year mandatory National Youth Service Corps in Gongola State (now Adamawa State) Prof. Richard King returned to the University of Port-Harcourt to enrol for the Master of Science (MSc – Hydrobiology and Fisheries Biology) and Doctor of Philosophy (PHD) in Zoology and Fisheries Biology degree programmes.
The Public service career of Prof. Richard King commenced in 1984 as Assistant Lecturer in University of Cross River State now University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
He progressed rapidly through the ranks to become the first Professor of Fisheries and Aquaculture in the University of Uyo. Professor King served in various administrative capacities at Uyo. He served as Head of Department of Zoology, pioneer Head, Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture; Dean, Faculty of Agriculture and Pioneer Director, Center for Wetland and Waste Management Studies, and Director, Directorate of Remedial Studies. He also functioned effectively as member of various Boards and Committee.
With over 25 years of experience as a University Lecturer, he has initiated and spearheaded the establishment of many courses and curriculum development. He has supervised over 64 research projects of various categories of students ranging from Ordinary Diploma to PHDs.
As an astute research scientist and prolific writer, he has enthroned and co-authored 56 articles published in International and National Journals, six edited conference and workshop Articles, seven (7) technical reports and Nine (9) scholarly articles among others.
As a public servant, Prof. King has served in various capacities giving the country his best. Prof. Richard King served as Chairman of the Governing Board of University of Port-Harcourt Teaching Hospital from 2007-2010 during which he introduced significant positive changes in administrative structure, infrastructure and human capacity development of the Teaching hospital.
He is currently the Chairman, Technical Sub-Committee of Presidential Monitoring Committee on the Niger-Delta Development Commission.
He is a recipient of not less than 15 awards locally and internationally.) In 2012 he was awarded academic novel international award by the Nigerian Institute of Industrial Administration.
Professor King is a family man, married to Chief (Mrs.) Laurel Richard King, a Pharmacist of great repute and the marriage is blessed with children.
