Two female students of Adeyemi College of Education ( ACE) Ondo, Miss Oyetunde Adeola and Odewumi Ajoke, have been awarded scholarship by the authorities of the institution.
The duo who were from the Department of English in the College, were honoured for returning the sum of N39,000 reportedly lost by another student of the institution, which they found on the campusand took to the office of the Dean of Student Affairs in the College.
This cherry news was broken by the Provost of the institution, Prof. Olukoya Ogen, in an address delivered on Wednesday May 22, 2019 at the 2016/ 2017 matriculation ceremony held for 3, 272 newly students made up of 950, 2,250 and 72 Nigeria Certificate in Education ( NCE), Degree and Professional Diploma in Education ( PDE) programmes respectivelyin the institution.
In his address, the Vice-Chancellor of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Prof. Anthony Elujoba represented by Prof. Bayode Popoola, Dean, Faculty of Education, OAU, congratulated the Management of the College for admitting the students and stated that by their admission, they (students) have become bonafide students of both the College and the OAU.
Prof. Elujoba described matriculation ceremony as very important, stating that the event is usually held to mark formal admission of students into tertiary institution. He alsostated that the occasion provides opportunity for those admitted to pledged allegiance to the authority of the institution that give admission to them.
The University Administrator advised the matriculating students to abide with the oath of allegiance read by them, by being obedient to the Provost and other officers of the College.
He also charged them to be of good behavior, and contribute positively to the growth and advancement of the College, by being alive to their social responsibility, which entails protection of the College property.
Also in his address, the Provost of the College, Prof. Olukoya Ogen, described the occasion as special and charged the new students to see their admission as the beginning of a new journey to success.
He stated that by participating in the matriculation ceremony, the new students have been officially admitted into the College and are advised to refrain from acts such as cultism, examination malpractice, disobedience, indecent dressing among others, capable of bringing the name of the College into disrepute.
On facilities available in the institution, the Provost listed them as including the presence of State-of-the-Art facilities and infrastructure in form of buildings, sporting facilities and Information Communication
Technology ( IT), saying the presence of the facilitiesmarkedthe institution out, as one of the leading IT and digital institution of the 21st century.
He listed some of the achievements recorded in the College since his assumption of duty as Provost to include introduction of e-voting system for the conduct of Student Union election, pioneering the introduction of fire optic intranet Campus Television in Nigeria (ACETV), floating the first On-Line Campus Radio in the country, introduction of e-procurement and breaking of record as the first College of Education to float academic press in the country to mention but a few.
Speaking on the primary focus of his administration, the College helmsman said effort would be devoted to human capacity development, which he said is geared towards the enhancement and advancement of both staff and students.
He stated that as a way of achieving the objective, all best graduating students with a Minimum of 4.00 Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) across all departments, would be given the opportunity of participating in the Graduate Fellowship Assistant Scheme (GFAS), adding that the introduction of the scheme is geared towards building people in order for them to add values to the institution.
Also speaking his administration’s bid at placing the College on the global map, the Provost disclosed the various collaborations and partnership made with Universities abroad leading to the choice of the institution as host of this year’s edition of the prestigious and highly competitive Carnegie African Diaspora Visiting Fellowship scheme.
He also mentioned the hosting right and financial support given to the College to the tune of $62,000 for the hosting of the 2017 Annual Toyin Falola Conference on African and the African Diaspora as some of the good things that have come the way of the College.
Prof. Ogen also disclosed the partnership arrangement made by the College with the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria ( TRCN) for the offering of Professional Diploma in Education ( PDE) programme in the institution, stating that the move is geared towards promoting professionalism in the teaching profession.
While reiterating the commitment of his administration to the provision of good learning environment, where students would be groomed, and trained not only in academic work, but also in morals and attitude, Prof. Ogen said this was necessary as ‘’ good character is what takes you beyond where your brilliance and intelligence could not’’. He advised the students to be of good character and imbibe the spirit of honesty in their dealings with staff and their colleagues during their stay in the institution.
In addition, he also enjoined the matriculating students to make friends, socialize, build networks, act rightly, fear God and make the best use of opportunities available to them in the College.
The colorful event whichheld at the Babatunde Ipaye Lecture theatre, featured performance from the College Music Department andclimaxed with the admission of oath of allegiance on the students by the out-going Registrar of the institution, Mr. Felix Eniola Aderinboye.
Important dignitaries who attended the ceremony include the Deputy Provost, Dr. Samuel Akintunde, Bursar, Mr Ganiyu Abdul, Acting Librarian, Mr. Akinade Awoyemi. Others were Deans from all the Five Schools in the College- Arts and Social Sciences, Science, Languages, Education as well Vocational and Technical Education.
Also present were Directors, Heads of Departments and Units including Head, Information and Public Relations Unit, Mr. Moses Akinfolarin, staff, students, family and friends of the matriculating students among others.
