Adeyemi College of Education (ACE) and Indiana University-Purdue University, Indianapolis, (IUPUI) have commenced the training of Professional Counsellors in the College.
The programme, according to the Course Developer and Contents Author, Dr. Carolyn Gentle-Genitty is a scholarly capacity building course using Indiana University E-Learning Management Tool comprising five modules with the participants receiving a certificate of completion from Indiana University.
The ultimate goal is to make ACE a national centre for the training of Guidance and Counsellors from other universities and colleges of education across Nigeria.
Dr. Gentle-Genitty in a letter to the College Provost, Professor Olukoya Ogen observed that the development of the course for the College, though valued at $12,000, is being offered to the College free of charge because of the robust academic collaboration between the Ag. Director, Counselling and Human Development Centre of ACE, Dr Caroline Obasoro and IUPUI’s School of Social Work.
In a letter of affirmation of support for the programme, the Dean of the School of Social Work at Indiana University, Prof. Michael Patchner added that Dr. Gentle-Genitty in partnership with the IUPUI Office of International Affairs will be visiting Adeyemi College of Education to evaluate what has been done so far with the training.
In his address during the commencement of the training, Prof. Ogen, observed that the College is ’’building on its existing relationship with IUPUI, he reiterated the fact that the Ag. Director of the Counselling and Human Development Centre, Dr Caroline Obasoro made two visits to IUPUI
in 2016 and 2017 respectively before the training programme could be finally consummated.
He added that Prof. Bessie-House Soremekun, the former Founding Executive Director of the Center for Global Entrepreneurship and Sustainable Development at IUPUI was also appointed as Visiting Research Professor at Adeyemi College of Education in 2015 after her memorable visit and that as Provost, he also personally visited the Lugar Centre for Renewable Energy at IUPUI in 2014 and 2015 where he had useful discussions with the Director of the Centre, Prof. Peter Schubbert for possible areas of collaboration in terms of the deployment of renewable energy in the College’’.
Interestingly, the immediate past President of the Counselling Association of Nigeria, Professor Alfred Adegoke who had a stint at Adeyemi College of Education in 2017 is one of the eminent Professors anchoring the project. According to him ‘‘we are convinced that the six week course and the areas covered by the six modules are quite relevant to our work here in Nigeria.’’
