The President, Board of Trustees, International Centre for Information and Technology Development (ICITD), Southern University, Louisiana, United State of America ( USA), Prof. Victor. W. Mbarika has dropped hint of plan by the institution to offer masters degree admission opportunities to two final year degree students, one each from Adeyemi College of Education and Wesley University, who emerged overall best in the 2018 / 2019 academic session. The two institutions are located in Ondo City, Ondo State.
Prof. Mbarika made the disclosure while delivering a keynote address at an international conference and workshop on Innovation, E- learning, Entrepreneurship and Grantsmanship held on Thursday April 12, 2014 at the campus of the Wesley University situated along the Ondo / Ile- Ife highway in Ondo City, Ondo State. Speaking on the theme of the conference entitled: “Strengthening Education Through Innovation, E-Schooling, Grantsmanship and Entrepreneurship For Sustainable Development in Africa, the ICT University BOT President stressed the importance of ICT in human capital development especially in educational institutions through the use of e- learning and harped on the need for tertiary institutions in
Africa to be strengthened, saying the move would promote global competitiveness.
He lamented what he observed as rising cases of graduate unemployment in Nigeria and urged government at all levels in the country to address the malaise through implementation of appropriate strategy and provision of necessary equipment.
His words: “Today our graduates are not as privileged as those who graduated several years ago. In years back, there were more jobs for people who graduate, we produce a lot of graduates today but they ended up without getting jobs. If we do not do something about this by equipping them with what it takes for them to perform, then we have failed them.”
On the plan by his University to offer masters degree admission opportunity to two best graduating students from Adeyemi College of Education and Wesley University respectively, he stated that the gesture was aimed at offering assistance and developing human capital in the two institutions. He said: “We want the top graduating students of Wesley University and Adeyemi College of Education in next academic year. We want you to send them to us. They would not be made to pay international tuition fee, but only local fee that are paid by American students. We will assist and give them modality, so that they can work and pay the local fee,” he remarked.
Speaking while declaring the conference opened, the Executive Governor of Ondo State, His Excellency, Arakunrin Odunayo Akeredolu ( SAN), represented by his Senior Assistant on Health, Dr. Jibayo Adeyeye, lauded the organizers and the collaboration between the three institutions, Wesley university, Adeyemi College of Education and the University of Medical Sciences, stating that the development would promote academic development in the country.
The Governor also stated that the academic gathering would go a long way in exposing participants, members of the academia, educational administrators, teachers, government officials as well as ICT professionals and other stakeholders in the educational sector to contemporary issues on how ICT tools could be leverage upon for use in innovative research writings, grants and funding opportunities.
The Ondo State helmsman stressed the need for the enactment of appropriate educational policy and investment in human capacity development saying the step would enhance societal advancement, boost educational development and promote skill acquisition. Underscoring the importance of ICT in contemporary world, Governor Akeredolu said apart from enhancing human activities in various field, its emergence has facilitated flow of information, thereby reducing the world into a global village.
His words: “You will agree with me that the ICT has become a potent tool in the education sector. Teaching activities in schools are now facilitated through the use of ICT. It has greatly helped students and lecturers in accessing and monitoring the progress of their students. The device has also enhanced administrative competence and proved to be a formidable tool for students in performing any task within a limited time, thereby enhancing effective learning for optimal performance in career growth and aspirations.”
The Ondo State Governor reiterated the commitment of his administration to quality education and emphasized the need for greater attention to be given to human capital development saying human factor remains the major determinant of success of any entity all over the world, hence the role of human resources in both academic and business environment can therefore not be over- emphasized,” he remarked.
Also in his remarks, the Chancellor of Wesley University, the Osemawe of Ondo, His Royal Majesty, Oba Dr. Victor Kiladejo, described the occasion as special and lauded the collaborative efforts of the three institutions that organized the event.
The royal father reiterated his support to Wesley University and expressed gratitude to the Methodist Church Nigeria, the founder of the institution, saying the establishment of the institution in his domain has brought positive development to the community.
Earlier in his remarks, the Prelate, Methodist Church Nigeria, His Eminence, Dr. S. C. K. Uche, described the theme of the conference as strategic as it would help in addressing core issues in the educational sector. Comparing the present standard of education in the country with the past, the religious leader represented by Very Revd. Oyetade, lamented what he observed as wide gap between the former and the latter and described the collaboration between the University and the two other institutions as welcome development, saying the move would help in enhancing educational advancement and strenghtened academic cooperation between them.
In his address of welcome, the Acting Vice- Chancellor Wesley University, Ondo, Prof. Wiliam Olu-Aderounmu explained that the 3- day conference was organised to cross ferlilize and exchange ideas on latest information on digital technology that would help in boosting innovation, expose delegates to research activities and facilitate efficiency in human activities in the country. Aderounmu lauded Adeyemi College of Education and University of Medical Sciences Ondo for partnering with Wesley University in the organisation of the conference saying “by working together, we will be able to achieve the objective of attaining best practice standard, ethic and academic research for sustainable development in Africa.”
The University administrator thanked the President, Board of Trustees of the ICT University, Baton-Rogue, USA Prof. Victor Mbarika, as well as the Osemawe and people of Ondo kingdom for supporting the university and expressed optimism that the institution would strive to be among the best in Nigeria in the next 10 years. He reiterated his determination to move the university forward, saying his decision to reach out to other tertiary institutions across the globe, and signing of five Memorandum of Understanding ( MoU) with them, was a clear demonstration of his commitment to the growth of the institution.
The ceremony held at the High Chief Olabanji Akingbule Multipurpose hall located inside the campus of the Wesley University Ondo, was attended by important dignitaries from all walks of life including academic, traditional institutions and government circle featured side attraction which include music performance by Department of Music, Adeyemi College of Education and Wesley University.
