The Adeyemi College of Education (ACE) Ondo Female Staff Union ( ACEFSA) has been inaugurated in the institution.
The ceremony organized by the Directorate, Gender and Sustainable Development Studies in the College, which held on Tuesday May 15, 2018 in the College featured the conferment of award on four eminent personalities including the wife of the Governor of Ondo State, Her Excellency Arabirin Betty Anyanwu - Akeredolu, the Deputy Director, Department of Public Prosecution, Ondo State Ministry of Justice, Mrs. Adegoke Stella Olufunmilola, a staff of the College in the Counselling and Human Development Unit, Mrs. Catherine Olubukunola Olotu and a student of the institution, Miss Suara Adejoke.
Speaking while declaring the ceremony opened, the Provost of the College, Prof. Olukoya Joseph Ogen expressed happiness for the inauguration of the association during his tenure in the institution.
He lauded the initiative and expressed optimism that the development has “tremendous prospect for the staff and students of this College and beyond".
The College Administrator also stated that the launch of ACEFSA would bring good fortune, hope, solidarity, academic and administrative excellence and human capacity development to the institution.
While expressing hope on the sustainability of the association, which he said was long overdue in the College, the Provost said " My desire is for the Association to become a rallying point for fostering development and advancing progress in the College ".
" I expect the members who I know to be cultured models of discipline and decency, majority of who are also mothers, to help the College in its drive to checkmate social ills on campus and build a better College. You should use this forum to empower, advice, mentor and encourage each other to strive for success especially in your various careers as academics and administrators".
The Provost commended the Director, Gender and Sustainable Development Studies in the College, Dr. Mrs. Martina Chinelo Onuegbu " for tirelessly pushing for the creation of the association and reiterated his administration's commitment towards gender friendly and promoting women welfare in line with global best practices .
He used the occasion to drop hints of plan by the Directorate of Gender and Sustainable Development Studies in the institution to offer courses in areas such as Gender and Sustainable Development Studies; Gender, Peace and Conflict Resolution Studies; Human Rights and Human Security Education studies , stating that the move which is currently awaiting the approval of the National Commission For Colleges of Education would promote research and helped in addressing contemporary world challenges.
In her remarks, the wife of the Governor of Ondo State, Arabirin Betty Anyanwu- Akeredolu lauded members of the ACEFSA for having the vision to establish the association in the college.
The Ondo first lady also described the inauguration of the association as a thing of joy adding that the vision and mission statement of the body, which share similar with that of her office, would go a long way in helping to promote empowerment, and advancement of women, mentoring of young girls, provide support to the needy and vulnerable members of the population, who are mostly women and children.
She commended members of the association for focusing attention on young girls and charged mothers to pay greater attention to children development irrespective of gender, saying the step would make the society a better place, and put an end to broken marriages, which is fast becoming a regular occurrence in the contemporary world.
Arabirin Akeredolu advocated the need for women to take active part in politics and national service, she equally stressed the need for them to fight against discrimination, sexual abuse, intimidation and denial of rights in areas such as promotion and elevation to higher status.
She said: “Women must show great courage by coming together. They should not stay in the confines of their husband's house and complain. They should walk the talk and change their mindset about gender parity"
On how the association should work to achieve the purpose by which it was established, the Ondo State Governor's wife enjoined them to give more attention to mentoring activities, stating that the step would encourage confidence building, break barriers, foster relationship and provide strength to young people that are mentored.
The Ondo first lady assured the support of her office and that of the Ondo State Government to the advancement of the association, and wished them well in the pursuits of their goals and aspirations.
Earlier, in her address of welcome, The Director, Directorate of Gender and Sustainable Development Studies ( DGSDS), Dr. Martina Chinelo Onuegbu, explained that the decision to establish the association in the College and choosing the theme " Press For Progress " as focus, was geared towards joining " other women all over the globe in the struggle for the emancipation and empowerment of women, and to combat societal inequalities and inequities.
The DGSDS Director stressed importance of unity among women saying "women can only press for freedom when they unite as a body" adding that the establishment of the association in the College was inspired” partly as a result of the observation of the productive activities of similar associations in other tertiary institutions in Nigeria and abroad.
Dr. Onuegbu stressed the need for all female staff of the College to identify with the association, noting that the move would enable them contribute positively to the development of the College and advance their career.
She expressed appreciation to the Provost of the College, Prof. Olukoya Ogen and other members of the institution's Management for financial and moral support towards ensuring the success of the celebration and pledged that her Directorate would continue to live up to expectation in the pursuit of its mandate.
Also in her remarks, the chairperson of the occasion, the Jomu Lobun of Ondo Kingdom, High Chief Mrs. Victoria Modupe Oluwole congratulated the organisers and promised to continue to identify with the association in its drive at advancing the cause of women.
In a paper presented on the occasion entitled " CANCER- A RAVAGING SCOURGE" by a Medical Practitioner from the Ondo State Specialist Hospital, Akure, Dr. Ndidi Okunnuga, described cancer as a disease whose cause is unknown and very expensive to treat she equally stated that the disease does not recognise status or body physique as it could occur in any organ of the body except the nail, teeth and hair.
She listed some cases of the disease to include breast cancer, cervical cancer, ovarian cancer as well as prostrate cancer and noted that the one that is most prevalent in Nigeria is breast cancer which is due to " lack of awareness of the disease".
The Consultant Radiation and Clinical Oncologist spoke on factors that may increase the risk of an individual developing breast cancer and listed them to include age, gender, early menarche and late menopause, family history, diet, obesity, prolong use of oral contraceptive pills as well as previous exposure to ionizing radiation and other environmental chemicals and tobacco smoking and alcohol intake to mention but a few.
On steps to take to prevent cancer, the Medical practitioner said "most cancers are highly preventable by lifestyle modification such as avoiding risky sexual practices and go for routine screening. The victory over cancer is achievable when you examine yourself regularly, eat proper and balanced diet remember to exercise often and see your doctor if you noticed any of the symptoms above".
The highlight of the event held at the Obongawan Ekong Lecture theatre in the College was the inauguration and admission of oath of Allegiance on members of the ACEFSA by a legal practitioner who is also a staff of the College Legal Unit, Mrs. Abimbola Adeduro.
Those who took the oath include Mrs. Olaoluwa J. Adebayo, President; Mrs. Yinka Tugbiyele, Vice- President; Mrs. A .P Olabode, Secretary; Mrs Adesina O. O, Assistant Secretary; Mrs. Ejabena, Financial Secretary; Mrs. Olusola Eniola Olagundoye, PRO; Mrs. O.B Segun- Odidi Socialite and Mrs. Seun Osamaye, Welfare Officer.
The event had side attractions which include musical presentation by a female guest artist, Lucille Korede, and climaxed with the presentation of award and plaques to the four eminent personalities.
Important personalities from all walks of life including Principal Officers of the College among whom were the Deputy Provost, Dr. Samuel Akintunde; Registrar, Mrs. Olufisayo Fakorede; Bursar, Mr Ganiyu Abdul and representatives of the Acting Librarian, Mr. Akinade Awoyemi , Deans and Directors, Heads of Departments and Units attended the programme.
Also present was the Ondo state Auditor General, Mr. Sunday Adegoke, members of the Federation of International Association of Female Lawyers, Representatives of market women, top government officials, ACE Student Union Executive, members of the political class, students and staff of the College from the Information and Public Relations Unit, Provost Office as well as Music Department to mention but a few.
