The Only Reader in Adeyemi College Retires at Sixty-Five

The last and only Associate Professor in Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo, Dr. John Olusesan Adejumo, has retired from the services of the College.

Dr. Adejumo retired from the College after thirty-three meritorious years in service with effect from 21st June, 2018 when he attained sixty-five years.

In accepting his notice of retirement, the Registrar, Mrs. Olufisayo Fakorede, on behalf of the Provost, Adeyemi College of Education noted that he had served the College for thirty-three years, five months and seven days.

The Registrar expressed the appreciation of the College to Dr. Adejumo for his invaluable contributions during his service at Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo.

“We have been impressed by the energy and dedication with which you served the College and wish you every happiness and good luck in your future career,” Fakorede stated.

Adejumo graduated from the then University of Ife, Ile-Ife, in old Oyo State, now Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, in 1978 with a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Agriculture with Second Class Upper Division and proceeded in 1979 to the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) programme in Animal Science from the same institution, which he eventually obtained in 1984.

After obtaining the Doctoral degree in 1984, he applied for a lecturing position at Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo, Ondo State, where he was employed as Lecturer II on 14th January, 1985.

The Ode-Omu indigene rose through the ranks to become Chief Lecturer in 1995 and was later, in 1999, appointed a Reader (Associate Professor) in Agricultural Science Education, along with five others who had retired from the College over a decade ago.

He was appointed Dean, School of Applied Science in 1992 as Senior Lecturer. He later served as the Dean, School of Vocational and Technical Education between 1995 and 1999 and eventually became Chairman, Committee of Deans from 1997 to 1999.

He was one-time Director, School of Postgraduate Studies and Research from 2004 to 2007, where he pioneered the College Lecture Series. It was on record that he was the longest serving member of the College Academic Board and was twice elected to represent the Academic Board on the College Governing Council.

He served as chairman of various College committees during his active days in the College. Until his retirement on 21st June, 2018, the erudite scholar was Chairman of the College Book Project Committee established in 2012 to produce quality instructional materials for students.

The animal scientist was Chairman of the Business Committee of the Academic Board from 2014 to 2016 as well Chairman of the College Information and Communication Technology Committee from 2004 to 2012.

The former dean also served as the Chairman of the College Analytical Laboratory, CAL. He was the Project Manager of the defunct Step-B (Science and Technical Education Post-Basic), a World Bank Project assistance to the College, which led to the procurement of equipment and eventual establishment of the exercise physiology gymnasium and the analytical laboratory.

The distinguished scholar was the Head of the Department of Agricultural Science from 1990 to 1992 and has been a member of a number of professional associations.

He was a mentor to many of his former students who are currently lecturing in the Department of Agricultural Science and other departments in Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo.

Dr. Muyiwa Ogunsipe, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Agricultural Science, Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo, who is a former student of Dr. Adejumo said that the College would miss his wealth of experience and wisdom.

Dr. Ogunsipe maintained that his former teacher was indeed a mentor, first among equals in terms scholarship and tertiary education administration.

Prior to his appointment in the College, he served as Agricultural Officer in Ankpa Local Government Area in old Benue State of Nigeria, now in Kogi State, during the national service between 1978 and 1979. He was later a Research Fellow at the International Centre for Africa from 1980 to 1982.

Since 1994 until his retirement in June 2018, Dr. Adejumo was an accreditation panelist to the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE).

While in the College, the former director served as associate lecturer in the Department of Animal Production and Health, Federal University of Technology, Akure between 1986 and 1990, while he was a Visiting Fellow to the Department of Animal Science, Federal University of Technology, Yola from January to December 1993.

In the course of his career, Adejumo co-edited eleven books, contributed eight chapters to books, and published eighteen journal articles and twelve conference proceedings. He supervised 620 NCE and 240 degree final year projects.

Born on 21st June, 1953 in Oke-Odo area of Ode Omu in Ayedaade Local Government Area in Osun West Senatorial District, Osun State in Nigeria, he was named John Olusesan Adejumo. He is married and blessed with children among whom are a medical doctor and a chartered accountant.
